Contents On 26 September, the International Cooperative Agricultural Organization (ICAO) and the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation (NACF) of Korea co-hosted the 2019 ICAO General Assembly at NACF headquarters in Seoul, Korea.

Established in 1951 as a sectoral organization of the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA), the ICAO has a membership of 38 cooperatives from 33 countries. Its secretariat has been hosted by the NACF of Korea since 1998.

Held on the theme of 쏛griculture: Dreaming of a Brighter Future, the assembly was attended by over 50 cooperators from 23 countries including Uganda, Brazil, Norway, Japan and India. Also attended were the Secretary Generals of ICA Asia-Pacific and Africa Offices to discuss current trends agriculture at both national and regional levels.

The main highlight of the event was the launch of a new ICAO vision: deliver 쏦appiness for Farmers, Peace for the World. To fulfill the vision, the ICA셲 sectoral organization outlined three core values: Harmony Between Humans and Nature; Happy Farmers, Happy People; and Bridge to the future, along with six specific action plans to support the values.

In his remarks, President Kim said: 쏷he new ICAO Vision suggests what we agricultural cooperatives should do for the future of agriculture and rural communities. 쏷he future of agriculture we want is one where agricultural development, improvement in farmers lives and growth of rural communities occur in a synchronized way.

The second part of the assembly consisted of an international forum for agriculture. Dr. Eui-sik Hwang, Deputy Director of Korea Rural Economic Institute (KREI) gave a talk on 쏶ustainable Agriculture: the role of Agricultural Cooperatives. The talk was followed by a panel discussion participated by a moderator and four cooperators, each representing their own continent. The panelists spoke about examples of local cooperatives contributing to sustainable agriculture as well as common challenges in achieving sustainability.

On Wednesday, a day before the assembly, the participants had the opportunity to visit the NACF셲 major distribution centre in Anseong, south of Seoul and Yangjae Hanaro Mart the biggest of the Hanaro grocery stores owned by the NACF.

The next ICAO event will be a meeting of its 9-member Executive Committee held in April next year in Brazil.
